15. Transformer (transformator):
In Zambia a simple system is used when installing electricity. If one wants electricity in ones
region, one pays all forthcoming costs: wiring, raising poles and buying a big transformer. As
soon this is arranged, others can be attached to the electricity network relatively cheap. As a
consequence everyone waits for everybody. Knowing this Joy of a Toy decided however that
a school and especially a health post can’t function reliably without electricity. It took
months negotiating with ZESCO (the Zambian electricity company), being confronted with
unreasonable prices. In the end however we reached an agreement. From that time on the
orphanage, the school, the health post, the grinding mill and the staff houses are supplied
with electricity.
